For public policy advocacy, such as environmental law advocacy, preparation in your chosen field could take a different form. A background in natural sciences, for example, would be helpful for an environmental advocate. An environmental advocate for the Chesapeake Bay Foundation would have to become familiar with the migratory birds of the region and would find the answers to such burning questions as, “Do blue crabs hibernate?”

How to Become a Child Advocate

For a paid child advocate position, most organizations will look for someone who has completed at least a bachelor’s degree in social work, preferably a licensed social worker. However, they may also look for someone with completed coursework in another social service field, such as psychology, sociology, or early childhood education.
